Zeche Zollverein, Essen
Rehabilitation after cable fire |
Situation |
The Zeche Zollverein (coal mine industrial complex) in Essen was once the largest coal mine in Europe. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001 due to the exceptional quality of Bauhaus architecture. Today, the industrial monument includes the Ruhr Museum as well as several cultural institutions and creative companies. | Due to a cable fire in one of the technical rooms, a large number of cable lines had to be replaced. Problems with water ingress in the past had to be repaired at the same time. Existing, undamaged cables had to be combined with new lines in one system to enable a gas and water pressure tight installation into the building. Separation of the lines had to be avoided to ensure the operation of the Zeche Zollverein. |
Solution
For the retrofit sealing of already installed cables and pipes in existing buildings, we developed the KRASO Plastic Flange Plate Type KFP made of high-strength special plastic. This enables a sealing in front of the wall and, as a split version, even eliminates the need to separate the cables.
In an on-site appointment with our field service, quantity and external diameters of cable lines were first determined. With these details the KRASO Application Engineers were able to design a suitable plastic flange plate divided into four individual elements. At the same time, matching KRASO Sealing Inserts Type SD 60 were manufactured for the actual sealing of the individual cables.
The on-site sealing was carried out by our installation team, who first dowel-fixed the KRASO Plastic Flange Plate to the wall. Thanks to the tongue and groove system, the individual elements of the plastic flange plate fit together perfectly. Finally, the KRASO Sealing Inserts were then installed to seal each individual cable gas- and water pressure tight up to 5 bar.
